The technical mistake of Knicking a ball the most common dismissal that you will see in the cricket field. Even the great players have gone through bad patches because of the knicking a ball half-heartedly. The question is is this really a mental thing or technical thing? It most probably is both.

Knicking a ball outside the off-stump happens because of Two main mistakes.
Mistake 1: Planting the front foot straight down the wicket too early.
Once you plant your foot straight down the wicket you can easily be caught at the slip or wicket-keeper by knicking the ball. Mainly because your weight is committed.
Mistake 2: Play away from the body
When you are stuck in the crease planting front foot forward, Your best option is to let the ball go. But nowadays it is a rare thing to see that players letting the ball go. Most often they try to reach the ball by playing away from the body with their hands outside the line of the head.
You will end up knicking the ball outside the off-stump by committing these mistakes.
It’s easy to correct the mistake of knicking the ball at a young age when your reflexes are at it’s best.
But if you are an exceptional player like Virender Shewag, Sanath Jayasuriya or Steve Smith playing outside off stump is a different story.
These players have overcome the problem of the technical mistake of knicking by their natural flair & guile. Also their immense potential of hand-eye co-ordination.
