Sri Lanka winning the 1996 World Cup

Winning the 1996 World Cup on the 17th of March was the turning point of the Cricket in Sri Lanka.

The final match was held at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, after a heated and controversial semi-final match between Sri Lanka & India.

Sri Lanka won the toss in the 1996 World Cup final & did not hesitate to ball first. Even though Ian Chappel & most of the TV commentary team have had doubts over the decision.

Australia batting first managed to score a par score of 241/7 after their mandatory 50 overs. Aravinda de silva took 3 Wickets for 42 runs.

In reply, Sri Lankan openers got out early & then walked in Aravinda de silva as the number 4 batsman. Aravinda played the innings of his life with the support of Gurusinghe & Ranathunga to lift the 1996 World Cup. Because of this bunch of lads who stepped up to lift a World Cup for their small island, Sri Lankan people still utter their names.
